Sowing the seeds for a coordinated Mindanao response to climate change

Over the past few centuries, the rate at which human beings have altered the Earth system and the various ecosystems of which it is comprised has grown exponentially. Species extinctions, deforestation, urbanisation and other changes to the landscape, along with the release of toxic substances to sea, land, and air have all been associated with rapid increases in the global population and economic activity (Steffen et al., 2004). Within the past several decades, it has become clear that the progressive growth of the human influence on the planet is now affecting the climate system itself (IPCC, 2001a; 2007). In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world’s leading scientific assessment body on climate change, published its Fourth Assessment Report that concluded (IPCC, 2007), “Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations. . . .Discernible human influences now extend to other aspects of climate, including ocean warming, continental-average temperatures, temperature extremes and wind patterns.” continue.... |
