PHILIPPINES: Farmers hit by changing rainfall patterns

MANILA, 18 May 2009 (IRIN) - Climate change is taking its toll on farming in the Philippines, with more than US$27 million damage done to crops and livestock by typhoons Kujira and Chan-hom, the National Disaster Coordinating Council reported [see: http://ndcc.gov.ph/home/] .

The heavy rains unleashed by the two back-to back-typhoons earlier this month are generally not expected until June.

However, according to specialists, climate change will disrupt the planting calendar, affecting the qual… Continue

Institutional dimensions of Payments for Ecosystem Services: An analysis of Mexico's carbon forestry programme

ABSTRACT

This article proposes a multi-dimensional framework for understanding the development and effectiveness of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes, framed around the notions of institutional design, performance and interplay. The framework is applied in the context of Mexico's Programme of Payments for Carbon, Biodiversity and Agro-forestry
Services (PSA-CABSA), with an emphasis on its carbon component. The analysis shows that PSA-CABSA was promoted by civil society and it… Continue

Toward a different debate in environmental accounting: The cases of carbon and cost–benefit

Abstract

Many champions of environmental accounting suggest that calculating and internalizing ‘externalities’ is the solution to
environmental problems. Many critics of neoliberalism counter that the spread of market-like calculations into ‘non-market’ spheres, is, on the contrary, itself at the root of such problems. This article proposes setting aside this debate and instead closely examining the concrete conflicts, contradictions and resistances engendered by environmental accounting… Continue

Seas turn to acid as they soak up CO2...A scenario and situation like this is similar to what we have right now... "Papaano na mga pamilya na umaasa sa biyaya ng karagatan natin?"

The Bay of Naples is renowned for its breathtaking beauty and glittering clear waters. For centuries, tourists have flocked to the region to experience its glories.
But beneath the waves, scientists have uncovered an alarming secret. They have found streams of gas bubbling up from the seabed around the island of Ischia. 'The waters are like a Jacuzzi - there is so much carbon dioxide fizzing up from the seabed,' said Dr Jason Hall-Spencer, of Plymouth University. 'Millions of litres of gas bubbl… Continue

Hello Perigine,

Nice to hear from you. So sorry, i just responded now. I was notified of your entries in this blog but now lang ko naka higayon usab. Thank you for the links you sent. This is really the idea of the site, partly to become a repository of climate change related literatures and resource materials. PhilDHRRA had to do this because our rural development agenda is under threat with this phenomenon. Each day thousands of farmers are experiencing and feeling the effects of CC. Grabe dyud. Pati ilang planting calendar dili na motonong. Ang resulta..FAILURE napud si pedro. Help us spread the word of this latest network preoccupation. Perhaps some of your colleagues and friends there might want to collaborate with us on this in any way possible. The possibilities are endless and we need concerted efforts to respond to this mammoth of an issue. Hope u are ok there and yes i will try to help in your dissertation whatever i can. Sige and best regards. Congrats diay for having achiever kids.

Welcome to Klima Mindanao Network (KMN)! This is the site where issues on climate change can be discussed in blogs and forums. The site is also a repository of relevant literatures, video documentaries, and other materials. On the lighter side, music, photos and videos can also be uploaded and shared here.
Let's make our site content rich by posting blogs and sharing views in discussions, and together make a difference in fighting the greatest threat to humanity -- Global Warming!
